Dear Prospective Families,

Thank you for your interest in Menotomy Preschool.  We are thrilled to share our 2023-24 program description and application process with families.

Menotomy Preschool is an integrated program for children with and without disabilities.   All children are provided with the opportunity to learn and grow in an inclusive, diverse learning environment.  All classrooms are multi-age in design.  Our teachers are licensed in early childhood and special education and provide individualized instruction to best meet the needs of each child in their classroom.  Related service providers (speech pathologist, occupational therapist and social worker) spend time in each classroom working with all students. By providing accommodations and offering challenges where appropriate, all children will progress on their own path.  All students engage in developmentally appropriate activities throughout the school day to promote social, language, emotional, cognitive and motor development.

It is important to note that MPS is not a traditional preschool or daycare. As an integrated preschool, our primary goal is to serve the needs of the students with disabilities in Arlington.  All students have the benefit of classrooms with highly qualified and certified teaching and related service staff while learning in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Menotomy Preschool offers full- and half-day options to our students.  Students must be 3 years but not older than 5 years of age by September 1, 2023 to begin in September. Please be advised that we do not plan a traditional nap time in our full-day schedule.  All full-day students will have a rest time daily, lasting no more than 30 minutes.  If your child requires more than the 30-minute rest time, we ask that you choose a half day schedule.

As you may know, the Arlington Public Schools have been working with the Massachusetts School Building Association (MSBA) on a rebuilding project for Arlington High School.  Because the preschool is usually located within the high school, it has been necessary to relocate the preschool to the Parmenter School (17 Irving Street) for the duration of the project. We are excited to share that the plan is for our program to move back to Arlington High School (869 Massachusetts Avenue) in the fall.  Please know that the current plan is for us to start the 2023-2024 school year at the Parmenter building and then move to our new location.  With this plan we may need to close for about a week in the fall in order to make the move.  More specific information will be provided as soon as it is available.

We have a lottery process which takes place in January/February of the year before.  You can find information regarding the lottery and the lottery application on our website.

If you have any questions please contact me in the preschool main office at 781-316-3698 or [email protected].

Thank you,

Joyce Schlenger, Early Childhood Coordinator
